Abang Temple Indonesia



Name :  Abang Temple (Yogyakarta) : the red temple in central java

Location :

Abang temple is located in Candiabang hamlet, Jogotirto village, Berbah sub district, Sleman regency, Yogyakarta.



Legend :

Local people still exist who believe, Temple Abang maintained a prominent and respected elder. He named Kyai Butcher, who has a great body and long hair.

Kyai Butcher is the protector of all the damage. In the days of Japan, residents often take refuge in the temple, because there is a belief. Kyai Butcher will protect them. Belief in very large Kyai Butcher. Thus, there is a story about a lump of gold as big as calves are believed to exist in the body temple brother, still living the story and no one dared to prove it.

Quite apart from all the stories, each place (one temple) has its own story among citizens. Such Candi Abang always associated with terpedam treasure story, or several stories about the place looking pesugihan. There are mythical stories of local residents ever tell me about Temple Abang, for example, why on top of the temple mound Abang no large plants growing? Why just grass? Because if you study the History of Java-owned Raffles, some temples are found even in conditions of "gripped" by the roots of large plants. Then why in the Temple Abang even no plants are "gripped"?

Description :

Abang (means Red in Javanese ) temple is classified into Hindu temple. The name "Abang" is derived from the color of the temple building material. The location of this temple is nearby some other temples like Banyunibo temple and Barong temple. It is estimated that the temple was built around 9th and 10th century during the time of Ancient Mataram Kingdom. Even so, this temple is said to have younger age compare to other Hindu temple found in Yogyakarta.

What to See & Do

Abang temple is located above the hill. Do not expect to see a temple with complete construction as in Prambanan or Boko. The temple is only a small temple shaped like a mound of land. The shape will remind you of a dome house or if you familiar, Teletubbies house. Before getting to the temple, you will have to pass rocky and inclining road. Nevertheless, the view of the teak forest will tease your eyes to look around and even take photograph. The temple is made of brick which has red color. That is why the temple is called abang, a Javanese word which means “red.” However, the temple is covered with grass during rainy season. The red color will appear only when the dry season comes. The red color of the temple is what makes it unique. The temples found in Central Java are usually made of andesite stones. Meanwhile this temple made of red stones, which is similar like temples found in the East Java.

The temple sizes a 36×34 base and shaped like pyramid. The height of the temple is not yet known. Firstly found, the temple has statue and octagonal yoni-base, as a marker that the temple is a Hindu heritage.

In the middle part is an entrance stair made of limestone. Some people thought there is a treasure hidden in the temple. They tried to dig the treasure but they ruin the temple. Nowadays, the real temple still cannot be seen. However, the surrounding of the temple presents a beautiful view of a wide green landscape. The temple area is famous among bikers community. They often riding bicycle together and visit this temple. When visiting the temple, you can also visit another historical site nearby. You can stop by at Sentono cave before climbing the hill to the temple. Your trip will be more fun if you use bike instead of other vehicles. During your biking trip, you can visit other temples nearby or simply passing through the villages with rice field view.




Sentona caves : Like Abang temple, Sentono caves also cultural heritage that must be introduced to others. In this cultural heritage consists of three caves that carved on the wall of rock hill facing southwest. This three caves located in line from north to south.

Cave 1 : There is Lingga Yoni Carved together with cave floor inside this cave. There are relieves of Durga Mahisasurawardhini and Mahakala in northern wall, also there is relief of Agastya and Nandiswara in southern wall. The relief are broken, especially on the part of face and hand. There is a painting of man sitting at the square statue base and tendrils, painted in black paint.


Cave 2 :  The reliefs of three statues carved in cave wall. Statue in the middle has sitting position on top of a square pedestal Dharmacakramudra hand gesture, while the two statues are located on left side of it standing with attitude Tribangga. In front of the statue which is in the middle position are Lingga Yoni. On top of the front on cave there is rectangular hole length: 50cm, width: 30cm, depth: 13cm. This hole may serve as a reservoir of water at Lingga Yoni worship.
Cave 3 :  In third cave there is relief that not been completed already. This relief may describe of a tortoise. In the middle of floor of cave there is a square-shaped hole length: 53cm, width: 50cm and depth: 12cm. Probably this hole used to put object of veneration.

Visitors Info

    It is suggested to go there by motorcycle or bike due to the rocky terrain.
    There is no parking lot available, but you can park your motorcycle at the villagers’ house.
    Do not leave your vehicle unattended because your stuff might get stolen.

How to Get Therejalan-candi-abang

    By public transport: Take Trans Jogja route 1A or 1B and get off at Prambanan shelter. Continue by taking bus route Yogya-Piyungan and get off at Bercak village. Continue by walking for about 1 Km toward Karongan village. The temple is located above the hill on the northern part of this village.
    By private vehicle: Take the route to Prambanan temple and turn right at the traffic light junction right before Prambanan temple (route to Ratu Boko). Keep heading south for about 8 Km and pay attention to the road sign showing direction to Abang temple.

Pura Tanah Lot Temple - Indonesia



Name :  Pura Tanah Lot

Location :

Located in Tabanan, about 20 kilometres (12 mi) from Denpasar, the temple sits on a large offshore rock which has been shaped continuously over the years by the ocean tide.

Description :

Tanah Lot means "Land [sic: in the] Sea" in the Balinese language. Tanah Lot is a rock formation off the Indonesian island of Bali. It is home to the pilgrimage temple Pura Tanah Lot.

Tanah Lot is claimed to be the work of the 16th-century Dang Hyang Nirartha. During his travels along the south coast he saw the rock-island's beautiful setting and rested there. Some fishermen saw him, and bought him gifts. Nirartha then spent the night on the little island. Later he spoke to the fishermen and told them to build a shrine on the rock, for he felt it to be a holy place to worship the Balinese sea gods.


Legend :

At the base of the rocky island, venomous sea snakes are believed to guard the temple from evil spirits and intruders. The temple is purportedly protected by a giant snake, which was created from Nirartha's selendang (a type of sash) when he established the island.

The Tanah Lot temple was built and has been a part of Balinese mythology for centuries. The temple is one of seven sea temples around the Balinese coast. Each of the sea temples was established within eyesight of the next to form a chain along the south-western coast. In addition to Balinese mythology, the temple was significantly influenced by Hinduism.


Restoration :

In 1980, the temple's rock face was starting to crumble and the area around and inside the temple started to become dangerous. The Japanese government then provided a loan to the Indonesian government to conserve the historic temple


The area leading to Tanah Lot is highly commercialized and people are required to pay to enter the area. To reach the temple, visitors must walk through a set of Balinese market-format souvenir shops which cover each side of the path down to the sea. On the mainland clifftops, restaurants have also been provided for tourists.

Candi Ceto



Name : Candi Ceto

Location : High on the mountains near Solo in Central Java, the temple of Candi Ceto is sited. Candi Ceto is situated further up the Candi Sukuh temple in the mountains. The temple is at an elevation of five hundred meters or 1630 ft above the sea level. One can get a splendid view of the city from the temple. Located high up on the mountains one will certainly enjoy the trip.

Description : Inscriptions found here is evidence to the fact that the Candi Ceto temple dates back deep into history. Some of the dates found inscribed here are AD 1468, 1472 and 1475. The basic layout and design of the temple is similar to that of the Sukuh temple but the Candi Ceto temple has many more terraces. There are as many as 14 terraces. As at Candy sukuh the main deity portrayed here is Bima. Tattered fragments of narrative relics were found in one of the lower terraces. This apart there are large numbers of small stone turtles.

One of the most interesting remains found here at the Candi Ceto is a dilapidated figure lying flat on the ground. At the western end is a large linga similar to that found at Candi Sukuh , lying horizontally and pointing to the west. At its base is a composition representing a tortoise on the back of a huge bat. On the tortoise's back is a number of sea creatures pointed in various compass directions.

During the 1970s a new gateway was built. New structures were also added to the upper terraces which include stone walls and floors. 50 meters further up, there are slopes which are used for bathing purposes. Several statues and a wooden shrine are to be found here. Till the late 1970s high profile people used to come here to meditate. They believed that this place had supernatural powers. Local residents still continue to devote offerings for the deities.

Candi Barong



Name : Candi Barong

Location : Hamlet Candisari, Bokoharjo, Prambanan Bokoharjo, Prambanan

Description : Actually this temple complex is located on the ground berundak 3 with some buildings in the temple every terasnya. But on the highest terrace of the HILL there are 2 temples to worship the god Vishnu and the goddess Sri as a symbol of fertility. Each temple has a size of approximately 8 meters x 8 meters to 9 meters high.

Candi Barong have tense and decorations such as dragon-like BARONG on the entrance door is a temple of Hindu which is located not far from the temple of Queen Boko, namely in Candisari hamlets, villages Bokoharjo, Prambanan, Yogyakarta. This temple was built in the century to about 9-to-10 and at the time of Ancient Kingdom of Mataram.

Ratu Boko Temple in Boko Palace



Name : Ratu Boko Palace

Location : about three kilometres south of Lara Jonggrang Prambanan temple complex in Yogyakarta Indonesia

History :

Not many people know that this palace is witness of the initial triumph in Sumatera land. Balaputradewa once fled to this palace before leaving for Sumatra when he was struck by Rakai Pikatan. Balaputradewa rebelled because he felt to be second person in the reign of Old Mataram Kingdom because of Rakai Pikatan's marriage to Pramudhawardani (Balaputradewa's sister). After his defeat and escape to Sumatra, he became the king of Sriwijaya Kingdom.

Description : It was a well defended palace-fort, some kind of citadel. Situated up on the hill, the Ratu Boko complex consist of:  Series of Gates.

. The body and roof is made from decayed material like wood or clay roof, but the base of building (palace) remains.

Aeschetic small cave for meditation At the northern part from pendopo, isolated from the rest of the site, lies two caves that were formed of sediment stones. The upper cave is called Gua Lanang (Male Cave) and the lower cave is called Gua Wadon (Female Cave). In front of Gua Lanang, there is a pond and three effigies. Based on the research, the effigy is known as Aksobya, one of Buddha Pantheons. The cave probably functioned as a meditation place.

This site is located 196 m above the sea level, on the highest point in the site, there is a small pavilion from which one will be able to see a panoramic view of Prambanan temple with Mount Merapi as the background.

 King Boko Palace was a glorious building that was constructed during the reign of Rakai Panangkaran, descendant of Sailendra dynasty. The palace that initially was named Abhayagiri Vihara (that means a monastery on a peaceful hill) was built for seclusion purpose and to focus on spiritual life. From this palace, you will feel peace and will be able to see Yogyakarta city and Prambanan temple with Merapi Mountain as the background.
This palace is located 196 meters above the sea level. The area of the palace as wide as 250,000 m2 is divided into four, namely center, west, southeast, and east parts. The center part consists of the main gateway, square, Combustion Temple (cremation place), pond, square terrace and assembly hall. Meanwhile, the southeast part includes hall, platform, three temples, pond, and a complex for princess. The caves, Buddha effigy, and a pond are in east part while the west part consists of hills only.
If you enter from the palace gateway, you will directly be guided to the center part. Two high gates will welcome you. The first gate has three entrances while the second one has five. If you look it in detail, you will read 'Panabwara' writing on the first gate. Based on Wanua Tengah III inscription, the word was written by Rakai Panabwara (the descendant of Rakai Panangkaran) who took over the palace. The intention of carving his name on the gate was to legitimate his authority, to give 'power' to the gate in order to look more glorious and to give sign that the building was the main building.
About 45 meters away from the second gate, you will see a temple made of white stones so that it was named Candi Batu Putih or Temple of White Stones.


Close to the place, you will also find Combustion Temple. The temple is of square form (measuring 26 meter x 26 meter) with two terraces. The function of the temple is to burn dead body as the name suggests. Around 10 meters away from the Combustion Temple, there are sacred terrace and a pond.
A mysterious well will be seen if you walk southeastward of the Combustion Temple. As the legend tells, the well was named Amerta Mantana that means sacred water treated with charms. At present time, the water of Amerta well is still used. The legend tells that the water brings luck for anyone who uses it. Hindu people use it in Tawur Agung ceremony, one day before the Nyepi day. Using water in the ceremony is believed to support the achievement of the objective, namely to self purify and to return the earth and its content to its initial harmony. Moving to the eastern part of the palace, you will see two caves, big pond measuring 20 meters x 50 meters and Buddha effigy that sits quietly. Those two caves were formed of sediment stones. The upper cave is called Gua Lanang (Male Cave) and the lower cave is called Gua Wadon (Female Cave). Right in front of Gua Lanang, there is a pond and three effigies. Based on the research, the effigy is known as Aksobya, one of Buddha Pantheons.

Even though it was built by a Buddhist, there are Hindu elements in it. This can be seen from the presence of Lingga and Yoni, Ganesha statue, and golden plate with the writing "Om Rudra ya namah swaha" on it as form of worship to Rudra as the other name of Shiva. The Hindu elements proved religious tolerance that is reflected in architectural works. In fact, Rakai Panangkaran who embraced Buddhism lived side by side with Hindu people.

Sukuh temple



Name : Candi Sukuh temple

Location : It is located in Berjo Village, Argoyoso district, in the slope of mount Lawu 35 Km east of Solo at a height about 910 m above sea level.

Description : The temple stretches from the east to the west with the main gate in the west. Sukuh Temple is decorated with wayang stone carvings of Hindu origin, the only erotic temple in Java. The stepped pyramid is like the ones in South America of the Maya culture. The temples are distinctive compared with other ancient temples in Central Java such as Borobudur and Prambanan, and its uniqueness lies in the landscaping, statuettes, and relief. The temples occupy an 11,000m2 area and consist of three terraces, each connected with an ascending alley. The most influential part is the last terrace, at the very back of the compound. At this very sacred area, once erected a homogenous phallic statue, which is now displayed at the National Museum, Jakarta.

Another interesting and controversial factor of this historical site is the artistic relief on its floor, which depict male and female organs symbolizing the birth of life. This kind of construction is common in prehistoric time, especially in the megalithic era of pundan berundak (terrace grave). The temple consist of three terraces, the first terrace is the lowest level, followed by the second and the third above it. The terrace are connected with stairs to each other, each of it has an entrance gate. The temple has believed to be constructed in the 15th century during the declining years of Majapahit Empire. The relief found beside the first gate are believed had mean (sengkalan) reads Gapura Buta Aban Wong and Gapura Buta Anahut Bubut, meaning the year of 1359 saka or 1437 AD.

Johnson, the resident of Surakarta, first discovered the temple in 1815 in a very poor condition during the period of Raffles government.

Borobudur - Indonesia



Name : Borobudur

Location : Borobudur temple located in the Jogjakarta city on central Java.

Borobudur is the biggest Buddhist temple in the ninth century. It was built by King Samaratungga from the Syailendra Dynasty. Borobudur temple is the one of the best-preserved ancient monument in Indonesia that are most frequently visited by over a million domestic as well as foreign visitors. It also had been acclaimed by the world as a cultural heritage. The architectural style has no equal through out the world. It was completed centuries before Angkor Wat in Kamboja. Borobudur is one of the world's most famous temples; it stands majestically on a hilltop overlooking lush green fields and distant hills.

Legend : It is believed to have been derived from the Sanskrit words "Vihara Buddha Uhr" Means "the Buddhist Monastery on the hill". Borobudur is a terraced temple surmounted by stupas, or stone towers; the terraces resemble Indonesian burial foundations, indicating that Borobudur was regarded as the symbol of the final resting place of its founder, a Syailendra, who was united after his death with the Buddha.

Temple Architecture : Borobudur is built of gray Andesite stone. The monument comprises six square platforms topped by three circular platforms, and is decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. A main dome is located at the center of the top platform, and is surrounded by seventy-two Buddha statues seated inside perforated stupa.

The monument is both a shrine to the Lord Buddha and a place for Buddhist pilgrimage. The journey for pilgrims begins at the base of the monument and follows a path circumambulating the monument while ascending to the top through the three levels of Buddhist cosmology, namely, Kamadhatu (the world of desire); Rupadhatu (the world of forms); and Arupadhatu (the world of formless). During the journey, the monument guides the pilgrims through a system of stairways and corridors with 1,460 narrative relief panels on the wall and the balustrades.

The walls of the Borobudur are sculptured in bas-reliefs extending over a total length of six kilometers. It has been hailed as the largest and most complete ensemble of Buddhist relieves in the world, unsurpassed in artistic merit and each scene an individual masterpiece.

Gedong Songo Temple



Name : Gedong Songo Temple (Nine Temples)

Location : This is a resort on the slope of mount Ungaran, about 900 meters above sea level in Indonesia.

Legend : Queen Simha of the Kalingga Kingdom was in power when the Gedong Sanga complex was built. She was known for her fair and respectable reign.

The Queen taught her people to worship Sang Hyang Widi, the Powerful God, and in order to accomplish this, she ordered that a temple devoted to Sang Hyang Widi be built.

According to the belief, human beings must be able to control their desires to live a peaceful life. The desires were said to come from the nine orifices of the body, called Babahan Hawa Sanga in Javanese. The erection of the Candi Gedong Sanga could be thus considered a symbol of controlling these origins of desire.

Description : Gedong Songo (nine buildings), a group of small 8th century Hindu Javanese temples was built during the Syailendra Dynasty. It can be reached either by car or on horseback from the town. Built at about the same time as the temples of the Dieng complex, Gedong Songo is one of the most beautifully sited temple complexes in Central Java and the views alone are worth the trip.

Gedung Songo ('Nine Buildings') belong to the earliest antiquities of Java, they follow up the temples on the Dieng Plateau directly, for what about time. They were also built high in the mountains in an area full with volcanic activity; and they were also from Hinduist origin. But where the temples on Dieng Plateau are somewhat squeezed into a foggy valley, Gedung Songo are spread over the higher parts of the mountains, which guarantee a splendid view. On clear days, the horizon is one long row of volcanoes, from mount Lawu in the east, towards mount Sumbing, mount Sundoro and Dieng Plateau in the west.

The Nine temples were built between 730 and 780 AD, the first temple excepted, which could have been built some 30 years later. Gunung Songo is not the original name and also doesn't point at the number of structures. The number nine has a special meaning in the Javanese culture, in which there is a strong attachment to numbers. The temples are located at about the same distance from each other (100 meters, 200 meters) on a naturally formed terrace of edge of a mountain.

Trekking attraction : A number of sulfur springs exist inside the complex, where simple bathing facilities are available — at a small fee — for those wanting to bathe or wade in the hot water. It is said the sulfur hot springs can cure minor dermatological ailments.

A complete trip through the complex is roughly a 2-km hike. The journey, which ascends and descends through groves of pine trees, ravines and sulfur springs, surely requires a good deal of energy.

BESAKIH TEMPLE - Indonesia



Name : Besakih Temple ( Mother's temple )

Location :
The temple was built on the south slopes of Mount Agung, the principal volcano of Bali.
Perched on the slopes of Mount Agung, at a lofty 1,000 meters (3,000 feet).

Description : Over a thousand years old, Besakih Temple is known as the "Mother Temple of Bali" Besakih is the biggest and holiest of all the Balinese temples. Bali's mother temple stands against a stupendous mountain backdrop on the southeastern slopes of Mount Agung. Named after the Dragon God believed to inhabit the mountain, it's said to be the only temple where a Hindu of any caste can worship.

Perched nearly 1000 meters up the side of Gunung Agung, it is an extensive complex of 23 separate but related temples with the largest and most important being Pura Penataran Agung. The temple is built on six levels, terraced up the slope. The entrance is marked by a candi bentar (split gateway), and beyond it the Kori Agung is the gateway to the second courtyard.

Architecture :

Pura Besakih is a complex made up of twenty-three temples that sit on parallel ridges. It has stepped terraces and flights of stairs which ascend to a number of courtyards and brick gateways that in turn lead up to the main spire or Meru structure, which is called Pura Penataran Agung. All this is aligned along a single axis and designed to lead the spiritual person upward and closer to the mountain which is considered sacred.

The main sanctuary of the complex is the Pura Penataran Agung. The symbolic center of the main sanctuary is the lotus throne or padmasana, which is therefore the ritual focus of the entire complex. It dates to around the seventeenth century.

A series of eruptions of Mount Agung in 1963, which killed approximately 1,700 people also threatened Pura Besakih. The lava flows missed the temple complex by mere meters. The saving of the temple is regarded by the Balinese people as miraculous, and a signal from the gods that they wished to demonstrate their power but not destroy the monument the Balinese faithful had erected.

Festivals :

Each year there are at least seventy festivals held at the complex, since almost every shrine celebrates a yearly anniversary. This cycle is based on the 210-day Balinese Pawukon calendar year.

It had been nominated as a World Heritage Site as early as 1995, but remains unvested.

Visitors to this temple should exercise caution as there is a syndicate operating in and around the premise of this temple. They target tourists by offering a compulsory "tour guide" at exorbitant charges. They also perform "prayers" and request for tips at the end of the "tour". Visitors who decline their "services" are dealt with rather aggressively.

Problems :

Illegal forced donations which are actually extortions were committed by local youths from surrounding villages on visiting tourists. Foreign tourists are asked for an additional 50 US dollars to visit, while Indonesians are asked for 200,000 rupiah (~$15 USD). Despite this, the local authorities have done little to stop such acts.

ULUWATU - BALI



Name : Uluwatu

Location : On the southern tip of Bali, Uluwatu is also high on a surfer's destination list. The road to the beach is pretty well-hidden, off the road to the temple of Uluwatu

Description : The temple is an amazing three-court temple on top of a few hundred feet cliff. You can't reach it by car - rent a motorcycle or walk for about two miles to get there. The site is very popular among serious surfers.
